Book Title: The Ghost Files

Author: Apryl Baker

Publication Date: August 13, 2013

Ghosts fascinate us and scare us at the same time. Most people do not believe in ghosts. Only a few claim they exist and of that, only a fraction can see ghosts. What if you’re one of the few who can see them? How will you handle things every time they cross your vision? Paranormal experts think that ghosts who continue to linger on have unfinished business. If you can communicate with them, will you say yes if they ask for your help?

“The Ghost Files” is about Mattie Hathaway, a foster kid who can see ghosts and can even communicate with them. She became an orphan at the age of five. She was in several foster homes before she was put in the Olson’s household.

In her new household, she starts seeing ghosts. Aided by the novice Officer Dan, Mattie uses her “gift” to try to uncover the deaths of the ghosts lingering near her. What awaits her is a shocking discovery and one that puts her life in grave danger.

About the storyline, I think the author did great with it. Everything fits. I also like the pacing – not too fast but not too slow either. The author knows how to build the suspense. She was able to keep me on the edge of my seat as I was trying to read fast to know who did it. The story also has an excellent twist in the end!!!

I just have a minor thing to say about the main character. Mattie would be someone talkative in person and that can be annoying sometimes. There are also quite a number of flashbacks injected throughout the novel. It just takes away the momentum when it’s an action-packed scene and the character suddenly starts having these flashbacks.

So what made me read the book? I like reading about ghosts, or anything paranormal or supernatural. The detective aspect of the story also drew me in.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, of course! It’s worth a read. If you’re into paranormal stories with sprinkles of detective stuff, then this book will entertain you.

The book ends in a cliffhanger though (like almost all YA books nowadays). But since my curiosity has already been piqued, I’ll definitely grab book 2 and indulge.
